Sport brings the Rotary “family” closer together

Rotarians come from many walks of life, with different backgrounds, jobs and interests; we come from more countries than are represented in the United Nations, yet have a common bond – the interest in each other, the wellbeing of our neighbours and the wish to do something about it. This is expressed internationally and nationally and also through meeting in competitive sport, at a local level.

Participation in our District Sports, ( London is Rotary District 1130 of the British Isles ) gives us all the chance to get to know our Club members more closely; building a team spirit, which becomes invaluable when the Club involves itself in charitable projects. There is the additional growth in fellowship with the members of the other competing London Clubs; nearly always with similar aims in life, yet people that otherwise you would never have met.;

Sport brings the Rotary “family” closer together, yet leaves room for that pride in playing your part in doing well for your club.

The Rotary Club of Paddington has a great history of success in the annual sports competition, which culminates in a “Sports Dinner” and prize giving in a top London Hotel every June. An evening of great fun & friendship between all the players.

Through the year, points are awarded to a club for entering and playing in one of the sports available. The “conveners” for each sport are club members that donate their time to the organization of their chosen sport and are relatively unsung heroes. The finalists gain additional points and the winning team or individual a further point award.

At the Sports Dinner, cups are given for the winners and runners up in every category, then there is the coveted prize for the overall winner – a truly tremendous achievement. So that smaller clubs have a chance in the “overall categories”, a relatively new prize for the club that achieves the highest number of points averaged out over its membership is now presented. This is a true measure of involvement and Paddington has proudly won this cup over the last two years.

The Rotary Club of Paddington has, in the last few years had champions and runner –ups in Backgammon, Golf, Chess, Ten Pin Bowling, Table Tennis, Outdoor Bowls, Squash and the famous Dragonboat racing.

But, whatever your level. JOIN IN. Taking part is what its all about!!.
