CURRENT PROJECTS
1. All Stars requested for funding for possible Olympic athlete (boxer). The applicant that has already been named is Suma Brown, 13 years old. He is one of the best junior boxers to pass through the All Stars ranks. He is also a top footballer and has been offered a place in one of the football academies. On Tuesday 13th September Akay will brought along Suma Brown to the meeting and a list of the competitions he will be entered for in a season will be submitted. Selections for the England under 19s would be when he reaches 16 years of age, assuming the goals are achieved, i.e. junior ABA champion etc. The candidate's father is a former boxer who was trained and managed by Akay in his fighting days.
2. Wytham Hall, caring for homeless people, registered charity number 289328, address: 117 Sutherland Avenue, London W9 2QJ; contact person is Emma Rembalski, tel: 020 7289 1978; website: www.wythamhall.co.uk. This is a local community based charity set up for the help of the sick homeless. They are able to come in off the street and as referrals from hospitals (St Mary's Paddington especially) and social services. The walk in surgery for the homeless is an alternative to hospital admission and is very active. Research into the causes and consequences of homelessness is carried out with top academic institutions in London and Oxford, and in-house placements for medical students for two to three week periods is provided in this field to medical students from London and Oxford. The recovery and rehabilitation unit has 14 beds and is run by a team of dedicated professional workers and doctors who work on a paid and voluntary basis but most are from London hospitals or practices.
3. Home-Start Westminster is a local charity with its address at Lisson Grove Health Centre, Gateforth Street, London W2 6PB, contact person is Christa Scoltz, tel: 020 7724 1345. This community based charity supports local families who live in over crowded accommodation and have very little space for getting together with other families. They are extremely isolated because of their circumstances and special events are arranged where the children can mix and play with other children. It will be an all day community based event with celebrations, fun fair, etc.
4. Church Street Neighbourhood Management, 88 Church Street, London NW8 8ET, contact person is Laura Cairns, Communications and Events Manager tel: 020 7641 6633, is part of the Paddington Development Trust, registered charity No. 1060883. This charity runs the Church Street Neighbourhood Centre and has been working for the last six years to make improvements to the Church Street Ward in the fields of education and employment, the physical and health environment, safer and cleaner neighbourhood, and decent housing. The request was initially for a summer festival on 4 September 2005. However, as this is not applicable for obvious reasons, the other events that are planned are Church Street Christmas Lights and Christmas Tree and next year's summer festival event.
5. Our Lady of Lebanon Youth Club: (registered charity no.: 1097426) based in Our Lady of Dolour's School, 19 Cirencester Street, London W2 5SR, contact person is Mr. Fadi Rahi, chairman of the charity, tel: 020 7551 8869, e-mail: fadirahi@olol.org.uk. This is a voluntary community and sport organization based in the Paddington / Edgware Road / Maida Vale area. It is a community youth club charity supporting the Lebanese community in the Westminster area, as well as any other young people who are interested in joining. Approximately 150 young people use the club at present and 25 volunteers of all levels train, support and cater for them.
